Interest rates have been catching up to inflation with the U.S. economy running hot after enjoying loose monetary and fiscal policies over the past 15 years. Those policies were intensified during Covid-19 and thereafter, unleashing persistent inflation globally, the likes of which have not been seen in 40+ years. The situation was aggravated given supply chain disruptions globally some of which still carry on. In response, the Federal Reserve pushed interest rates up at the fastest pace in decades, tipping the U.S. treasury market into a secular bear market that is reshaping the investment outlook moving forward. Today, there are new challenges that are being thrown into the mix, including China re-opening its economy and ongoing geo-political tensions in eastern Europe that could remain supportive of higher inflation (and interest rates).
