Liquid Alternatives: Institutional-Grade Investments for Everyone
James led working groups for six years ahead of the implementation of what has been called the Liquid Alts legislation for Canada. Before January 2019, only possibly 1% of Canadian investors (so-called Accredited Investors) had access to alternative strategies such as market neutral, hedged credit, long-short equity, and multi-strategy. Such modes of investing are proven to produce lower volatility on their own and, via their low correlation with other investments like stocks and bonds, reduce the overall volatility of investor portfolios - all the while providing return to investors similar to that of riskier investments. With this new legislation, all (retail) investors in Canada can add these investments to their RRSP and non-registered plans. The managers of these funds are well-versed in their strategies and AUM has grown steadily to more than $20 billion (1% of overall mutual fund AUM).
